Sun & Shield Christian Academy
Frequently Asked Questions
MISSION
As a ministry of Sun & Shield Baptist
Church, we endeavor to assist the families in our community with the
education of their children by:
-
Providing a
stimulating academic program,
-
Providing a
distinctly Christ-centered environment,
-
Training students to
have personal and social responsibility,
-
Equipping students
with spiritual integrity and moral philosophy.
METHOD
Discipleship: The goal of our teachers is not
only to teach curricula but also to train character. Our frequent
communication with parents and low student-to-teacher ratios enable
teachers the opportunity to mentor each child individually.
Procedures: Sun & Shield Christian Academy practices the
Grammar learning stage, as asserted in "The Lost Tools of Learning," for
our kindergarten through sixth grade classes.
These methods include:
-
Songs & Chants
-
Hands-on projects
-
Models & Displays
-
Drills & Games
-
Drama & Recitation
-
Field trips
MATERIALS
While students in K-3rd are given instruction in science and history,
our focus in these formative years are the basics of old: Reading,
Writing and Arithmetic. Therefore, our traditional curriculum
is material that has been successfully used for decades.
-
A Beka Phonics
This program leads to early independence in reading by
developing early-word analysis and comprehension skills.
-
Saxon Math
Saxon Math is unique because the entire program is based on
introducing a topic to a student and then allowing the student to build upon that concept as they
learn new ones.
-
Shurley Grammar
The Shurley Method uses repetition, fun songs and chants, and a
concrete set of questions about each word in a sentence to teach
students how all the parts of a sentence fit together.
